I first started drawing monsters in 2012 for #monstermonth, where you’re encouraged to draw a monster each day of October (thanks, Rob Larsen!). What started as an isolated experiment has become a near-daily practice.

Why monsters? I love all things supernatural (though my creatures are pretty tame). Also, it’s often easier for me to express feelings if they’re projected onto a fantastical creature, whether it’s in writing or illustration.

As you can see, these are all very sketchy. It’s an important exercise for me in making things that don’t have to be perfect to be worth something. There are many I’ll never share that only exist to fill sketchbooks under my bed. Fitting, eh?

It wasn’t until a friend pointed it out that I realized it was staring me in the face all along: They’re me.
